Arena Selection & Weather Safety Policy

To ensure the safety, comfort, and quality of instruction for both horses and riders, lessons are assigned to either the Outdoor Arena or Indoor Arena based on weather, visibility, footing, and wind conditions.

Final arena selection is made daily by the instructor.

🏟️ Outdoor Arena — Weather-Dependent Use

How We Evaluate Outdoor Conditions

The outdoor arena provides excellent riding conditions in fair weather but is fully exposed to wind, precipitation, and natural light limitations. Because the arena does not have artificial lighting and is susceptible to strong winds, stricter criteria apply.

Outdoor lessons are only conducted when:

  • Natural light provides full, consistent visibility
  • Wind does not create spooking risk or move equipment
  • Footing remains firm, level, and non-slippery
  • Weather conditions are stable for the full lesson duration

If any of these factors deteriorate, lessons are moved indoors or modified.

Quick Decision Metrics (Flag Criteria)

Outdoor Arena = GREEN (Approved)

All of the following must be true:

  • Daylight fully covers lesson time
  • Temperature: 40°F–85°F
  • Sustained wind: ≤15 mph
  • Gusts: ≤20 mph
  • No lightning, thunder, or heavy rain
  • Footing is dry or lightly damp with no pooling

Outdoor Arena = YELLOW (Conditional / Instructor Discretion)

  • Temperature: 32–40°F or 85–90°F
  • Light drizzle with stable footing
  • Wind steady but near limits
  • Lesson intensity must be reduced

Outdoor Arena = RED (Closed / Move Indoors)

  • No daylight or fading light
  • Sustained wind >15 mph or gusts >20 mph
  • Thunderstorms or lightning (any distance)
  • Heavy rain, snow, ice, or fog
  • Mud, standing water, frozen or dusty footing

🏠 Indoor Arena — Weather-Protected Use

How We Evaluate Indoor Conditions

The indoor arena is equipped with full lighting and provides protection from wind, rain, snow, and sun exposure. This allows lessons to proceed year-round and into the evening, provided footing and ventilation remain safe. The arena uses GGT (Gel, Grit, and Textile) footing, which provides consistent surface quality but requires temperature considerations for optimal safety.

Indoor lessons are typically used when:

  • Outdoor conditions are unsafe or marginal
  • Evening lessons require lighting
  • Wind conditions exceed outdoor safety thresholds
  • Weather stability cannot be guaranteed
  • Cold weather makes outdoor arenas unsuitable

Quick Decision Metrics (Flag Criteria)

Indoor Arena = GREEN (Full Lessons)

  • Temperature: ≥ 35°F
  • Lighting fully operational
  • Footing level, dry, and non-slippery
  • All lesson types appropriate (walk, trot, canter, jumping)
  • Ventilation adequate for conditions

Indoor Arena = YELLOW (Modified Lessons)

  • Temperature: 20–35°F
  • Cold conditions requiring extended warm-ups
  • Reduced lesson intensity (walk/trot recommended)
  • Shorter lesson duration
  • High heat (>85°F) requiring increased hydration breaks
  • High indoor traffic requiring lesson format adjustments

Indoor Arena = RED (Mounted Riding Restricted/Suspended)

  • Temperature: < 20°F - Cold stress risk
  • Mounted riding restricted or suspended
  • Non-mounted activities may be available (grooming, theory, ground work)
  • Unsafe footing (frozen, icy, compromised)
  • Lighting or power failure
  • Structural or emergency safety issue

🛡️ Rider & Horse Welfare Overrides (All Arenas)

Regardless of arena designation, lessons may be stopped or modified immediately if:

  • A horse shows signs of stress, fatigue, or overheating
  • A rider experiences dizziness, cold stress, or heat exhaustion
  • Weather conditions change rapidly during a lesson

Safety decisions are not negotiable and are made to protect all participants.

Note: Arena assignment and lesson format are determined daily at the instructor's discretion based on weather, footing, visibility, wind, and overall safety conditions. Lessons may be moved indoors, modified, or cancelled to ensure the welfare of horses and riders.
